Note - air valve covers ("coasters" -- one is visible in top picture) are also polished.  I made my own  from aluminum, but I'm not set up to take orders.  Check VROC.org for folks who will make them for you.

Done!  All engine parts are now polished.
Removal of the original paint was difficult, given all the nooks and crannies where it could hide.  I used sanding flap wheels on a 3/8" drill, small grinding wheels on a mini die grinder, and just about every Dremel wheel I could get hold of, plus assorted grinding heads.

Initial removal was with heavy duty paint stripper.  In some places, the little spot cleaning sandblast gun from Harbor Freight Tools was useful too.

Polishing method:  Same as engine cases. All supplies from www.tarheelparts.com

For a final pass, I used my new DeWalt 4 1/2 inch grinder.  11,000 rpm, 11 Amps!  Whooo-eeee!!  It puts a wicked shine on things, but you can reduce a 6" polishing buff to a pile of lint in about 90 seconds...
