Here's the plastic oil gear that drives the oil pump on older Vulcans.  I am replacing it with the Kawasaki steel gear.

No catastrophic wear on the teeth, although you can see some ridges.  Look especially at "11 o'clock" and "7 o'clock".

My understanding is, though, that the POG's that failed did so spontaneously, not through gradual wear.

Mileage on this one:  about 46,000.

Stripping the cylinder(s).  For removing the stripper and gooey bits, I found this little mini pressure washer from Harbor Freight tools helpful.  It operates on compressed air, and a hose in a bucket of water.

The stripped engine cases.  Where the surface is rough, I'll have to smooth them with abrasive compound (Tar Heel Parts) on a small buffing wheel before starting to polish.
After pressure washing, I blew the water out of the bearings with compressed air. Then I force-dried them with a heat gun.  After that I gave them a generous spraying with WD-40 to displace any remaining water, and prevent rust.
